Air Guns: Tips to Improve Your Shooting Accuracy
It takes time to truly master the art of air gun shooting. I've been told over and over again that even a brand new air gun needs breaking in, and lots of practice before it hits its prime state. Whatever your level is, these tips for better accuracy should get you more skillful when it comes to shooting air guns.
Practice, practice, practice
There really is no shortcut. Find yourself a routine that makes you comfortable: from the type of air rifle you use to the material of the targets you set up. Little things such as breathing, body alignment and trigger finger positioning do play a role in your accuracy.
Breathing. For example, believe it or not, some air gun shooters hold their breath. Not acceptable. When you inhale while shooting, your aim tends to be low. When you run out of breath, your body has a natural response to shoot high. The best thing to do is to take at least three deep breaths before you shoot.
Stability. The stability of your body in relation to your air gun is also important. Your air gun should fit you well. You should be able to see through the center of your scope without parallax error. Here's the tip: Aim at the target, close your eyes, turn your head to the left or right, open your eyes and return to your aim. If your aim position has changed, adjust your body until you are on target.
Better yet, place the air gun on a stable surface that prevents human and wind interference.
Trigger Finger Positioning. Where your finger rests on the trigger may also make or break the deal. Keep your finger in the same position from start to finish. Finger too inward shoots more to the right, finger too outward shoots more to the left. This may seem trivial but it makes a lot of difference during a shooting match.
Choose your accessories wisely
Pellets - Use only high quality pellets. Don't compromise on these. Many seasoned air gun shooters suggest using dome-headed pellets for starters, then keep testing which type will be your air rifle's best friend. I know it takes a lot of trial and error but the right type of pellets lets you shoot with better results.
Scopes - Some air gun shooters swear by the increased accuracy when using scopes. Scopes are better when their magnification is higher with finer reticles.
Shoes - Stability plays a big role in air gun shooting. Stable shoes gives you a firm position on the ground, thus giving you a better aim.
Other factors such as trajectory, scope cant, the size of your group shot (the smaller the better), or even the type of material you use for targets also play a role in the accuracy of your shots. Once again, the more you practice, the better you progress.
