How to Extend the Life of Your Binoculars

Whether you've already owned binoculars or are buying them for the first time, it makes sense to understand how to take care of them so that they last longer. Here are some tips from Tacmor staff:

Choose the right type of binoculars according to your need.
Are you birdwatching, hiking, boating, or on surveillance? Pick the right type of binoculars that will withstand the abuse associated with the particular task. For boaters, it makes sense to choose waterproof binoculars. For wildlife observation, choose binoculars that have a wider field of view (although they tend to be bulkier). The key is to understand which type of binoculars will withstand a certain amount of damage.

Read the manual.
The manual obviously provides information on how to handle your binoculars the right way. It makes no sense to purchase expensive binoculars if they suddenly break because of mishandling.

Use straps or harnesses.
The straps on the binoculars keep them from accidentally falling and/or breaking if you wear them around your neck all the time. If you don't like wearing them because they're cumbersome, try using a body harness. Tip: Choose straps or harnesses that don't stretch. The firmer the strap, the steadier the hold. Also, if you already own one, periodically check it for wear and tear.

Store binoculars in a case.
Storage is very important when it comes to prolonging the life of your binoculars. Keep them in a padded case when not in use, and make sure the case is not stored in direct sunlight or snow. Extreme temperature can cause damage on the barrels which can also cause the lenses to either crack or lose alignment.

Clean binoculars regularly, but don't overdo it.
The lenses on the binoculars are the most fragile yet most useful part. Wipe them regularly with clean microfiber lens cloth, or use a cleaning tool like a Lens Pen. To clean salt water off the lenses, first rinse it off under running water before wiping gently.

Prevent any further damage.
As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure! When damage occurs, you will have to get your binoculars professionally repaired or eventually buy a new pair. Therefore, prevent any possible wear and tear if you can help it. This is the key to extending the life of your binoculars.
